Blackberry are back with a new handset, the Pearl 9100 3G. Aimed primarily at carrying out tasks with maximum efficiency, rather than doubling up as a fashion statement as many new phones do, the handset boasts an impressive range of functions.

For storing data and files such as music tracks, video clips or photos etc, the Pearl 9100 3G offers 256 megabytes of internal storage. A micro SD slot is provided for this purpose also, and comes with a pre-installed 2 GB memory card. Should further storage be required, this can be swapped for a larger memory card of up to 32 GB. This should be ample for the needs of most users as is capable of storing an entire music collection.

The Blackberry 9100 Pearl 3G is equipped with a digital camera boasting 3.15 mega pixels. This operates at a pixel resolution of 2048x 1536 pixels. Therefore the still images are of reasonably good quality with high levels of clarity and detail. Autofocus and an LED flash are provided to simplify the task of taking good quality photos. The camera can also shoot video as an alternative method of image capture.

A good number of extra features and applications result in the Pearl 9100 3G being a versatile handset for everyday use. Blackberry maps functions thanks to GPS with A-GPS support, whilst the internal media player supports a wide range of different music and video file formats such as MP3 and MP4. Business users are sure to appreciate a document editor (compatible with Microsoft Office and PDF documents).

In order to stay connected to both cellular networks and the Internet, the Blackberry 9100 Pearl 3G utilises an array of different connectivity features. The handset connects to cellular networks via class 10 versions of both EDGE & GPRS. In areas covered by 3G, access to the Internet is provided courtesy of an HSDPA connection at speeds of up to 3.6 mega bytes per second (alongside HSUPA). In order to attain a much faster Internet connection, at speeds equivalent to that of a broadband connection, Wi-Fi Technology is utilised. Whenever this detects a signal from a wireless Internet router, it utilises the signal to provide a faster web browsing experience. In order to connect to other compatible hardware devices such as mobile phones and computers, both Bluetooth and micro USB connections are provided.

The TFT screen utilises a pixel setup of 360x 400 pixels to display up to 256K colours, providing excellent quality display of on screen imagery. In order to navigate the Blackberry OS user interface, a touch sensitive optical trackpad is provided, whilst a half QWERTY keyboard offers an efficient means of entering text.

The Blackberry 9100 Pearl 3G measures 108x 50x 13.3 mm making it a pocket friendly handset especially coupled with its light weight of 93.6 g. Its dimensions also make it ideally sized to be a comfortable handset to hold and use on the move.
